51 years a runner and 31 years a triathlete

Hello and welcome to my blog. My name is Dr. John and this site is a reflection of my philosophy of life. I have been an endurance athlete for over 51 years and a triathlete for over 31 years. I have to admit that training, racing, and traveling give me great pleasure.

2020 was supposed to be a epic year for me. My intention was to celebrate the anniversary of 50 years of being an endurance athlete and 30 years as a triathlete. The celebration was to reach its crescendo with Half Ironman North Carolina in October.

It didn’t happen so I am making 2021 a re-do year for me but only better. This year I am at the top 70 to 74 age group and I think “WOW! How fast life goes by!”

I don’t know how many years  I have left. That’s mostly out of control. What is within my control is how I chose to live each day and the decisions I make.

For example, if I have only fifteen years remaining, I do not want to live one year fifteen times, I chose to live fifteen different years. This means engaging in a life that creates joy, love and fulfillment. For me, that means being with people of a like mind, challenging myself with endurance sports, and traveling and experiencing new destinations.

In this regard, since being in the 70 to 74 age group I have participated in several exciting and/or challenging events. Then on July 11, 2017 I had a bucket list event: I went to Spain to Run with the Bulls in Pamplona. The word “with” is misleading, one does not run with the bulls. The Bull Run distance is a little over 900 hundred yards so and these 1200 pound animals run the cobbled streets in about 2minutes and 15 seconds. The Bull Run is best characterized as “survival of the fittest” but it  was great fun.
